Thirthahalli is surrounded by the dense forests of Western Ghats and it is situated 591 meters above sea level.
The Legend of Thirthahalli
Sage Jamadagni instructed his son Parashurama to chop off head of his wife Renukadevi. Parashurama obeyed his father's instruction and chopped off his mothers head using his axe. The blood stains remained on the axe and Parashurama tried to wash his axe by dipping the axe into various rivers. However, sesame-sized (sesame means Yellu in kannada language) blood stain remained on his axe even after dipping into various rivers. Finally the sesame-sized blood stains were washed away after dipping his axe in River Tunga. Since blood stains were completely removed at this place, this place was named as Thirthahalli (Thirtha means Holy water and Halli means Village).
The place is also called as Parashurama Thirtha or Rama Thirtha. Near Rama Thirtha, there is a stone mantapa called Rama Mantapa.
It is believed that a holy dip in River Tunga at Thirthahalli will cure one of all sins.
