Shakatapuram
Shakatapuram is a small village and a religious place located in Koppa Taluk of Chikmagalur district.
Shakatapuram is also known by name Bandigadi. A Mutt by name Shri Vidya Peetam is located on the banks of River Tunga.
The history of the Shri Vidya Peetam is more than 600 years old, and the Mutt can be traced to a Sage named Thotakacharya, who was a disciple (Shishya) of Sri Adi Shankaracharya and the first pontiff of the Uttaramnaya Jyotish Peetam, a Hindu religious center, located in Badrinath.
A Sage named Sri Satya Theertha who was of the same lineage as Thotakacharya, came to Shakatapuram about six centuries ago and established the Shri Vidya Peetam. He brought the idol of Lakshmi Narayana from Badrinath and installed at Shakatapuram. Lord Lakshmi Narayana is the presiding deity of Shakatapuram.
There are shrines dedicated to Krishna, Rajarajeshwari, Dattatreya, Durga, Umamaheshwara, Vishveshvara, Venkataramana, Siddi-Vinayaka and Mahaganapathi at Shakatapuram.
The Mutt has been succeeded by 33 Peetadhipathis. The present Peetadhipathi Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Krishnanda Theetha Majaswamiji adorns the Peetam on 22-Feb-1981 as 33rd pontiff at the age of 13 years.
The Kumbhabhisheka event held at Shakatapuram attracts a number of devotees.
