Sagar also known as Sagara is small town and taluk headquarters in Shimoga district.
Sagar is located in Western Ghats and it is surrounded by the forest regions and water bodies. Sagar is situated 580 meters above sea level.
Sagar gets its name from Sadashiva Sagara, a lake constructed by Keladi Ruler Sadashiva Nayaka between Keladi and Ikkeri. This lake is now called as Ganapathi Kere.
Sagar is well known destination as far as tourism is concerned. Jog Falls, a popular water fall of Karnataka is very close to this town. Other important places like Ikkeri, Keladi, Varadahalli and Varadamoola, origin of Varada river is also located near Sagar.
Sagar is surrounded by places of historical places and natural attractions including the Sri Marikamba Temple and Sri Mahaganapati Temple in Sagar town.

Keladi: Keladi is located at a distance of 8 Km from the Sagar town on Sorab Road Keladi was once the capital of the Keladi rulers, a feudatory of Vijayanagara Empire. The main attraction of Keladi is Rameshwara Temple which is constructed in the Hoysala-Dravida style.
Ikkeri: Ikkeri is a historical place located at a distance of 3 km from Sagar. Ikkeri was the capital of the Keladi rulers for about 120 years. The prime attraction of Ikkeri is the Aghoreshwara Temple.
Kalasi: Kalasi is situated at a distance of 8 km from Sagar town and one has to travel along Soraba Road for 6 km and take a diversion. Kalasi is another historical place with a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Varadahalli or Varadapura: Varadahalli is a small village surrounded by picturesque location, near Sagar Town. Varadahalli is well known for a famous Mutt (Ashram) called Sridhara Swami Mutt. It is famous for the Samadhi of His Holiness Sri Sridhara Swami one of the great saints of 20th century.
Heggodu: Heggodu is a small village is located at a distance of 8 Km from in Sagar town of Shimoga district. Heggodu is popular because it houses a famous cultural organization called Ninasam or NeeNaSam.
Honnemardu: Honnemardu is a small village and very popular travel destination for adventure tours is nestled along with the backwaters of River Sharavathi near Sagar.
Holebaagilu: Holebaagilu is situated on the banks of the Sharavathi River at about 30 km from Sagar. The Sharavati backwaters of Linganamakki dam have submerged acres of land here. It is a place of natural beauty. One has to take a launch (ferry) to get across the backwaters to reach the other side where Sigandur is located.
Sigandur: Sigandur is a beautiful place and small village surrounded by green and backwaters of River Sharavathi in Sagar Taluk. The main attraction of Sigandur is a temple dedicated to the Goddess Chowdeshwari which is called as Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple.
Jog Falls: World famous Jog Falls is located at a distance of 35 Km from Sagar.
