Mundkur Durga Parameshwari Temple

Mundkur is a beautiful temple village located in Karkala taluk, Udupi district.

The main attraction of Mundkur village is a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga Parameshwari. This temple at Mundkur features with a history of 1300 years.
The main deity worshipped here is Goddess Durga Parameshwari in the form of Mahishamardini, holding the demon Mahisha upside down and piercing thrishul (weapon) on the body of Mahisha. Therefore the name 'Mundakke oori nintha OOru' became Mundkur in the later days.

There are shrines for other deities in the temple. The other deities worshipped here include Lord Ganapathi, Dhoomavathi, Raktheshwari, Vyaghra Chamundi, Vaarahi, Rakshopi Devatha and Navagraha.

Annual car festival at Mundkur is held on Kumbha masa which is on 17th or 18th February.

The uniqueness of Mundkur is that, it is surrounded by Shambhavi river on three sides (East, West and South). Four temples dedicated to Lord Shiva are located around Mundkur. Posaral Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple towards South-East, Inna-Muddanu Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple towards North-East, Ulepadi towards the South-West and Bola towards the North-West.

Nearby attraction:

Gurumeru, a place located in the North-East corner of Mundkur. This place is surrounded by the forest and hills and you can see water flowing all 365 days at this place. It is also believed that saints belonging to the Bharghava Gothra were performing penance and meditation at this place. This place is rich in natural beauty and you can see rare kinds of birds, snakes and wild animals.
