KarkalaKarkala is a peaceful town located at a distance of 35 km from Udupi and 20 km from Moodbidri. The name Karkala has been derived from the Kannada word karikallu, meaning black stone.
Bhagawan Bahubali at Karkala The 42 feet monolithic statue of Bhagawan Bahubali at Gommateshwara betta is located just 1 km from the town. It is said to be the second tallest in Karnataka. The Bahubali statue at Karkala was erected on February 13, 1432 on the instructions of the pontiff of Karkala. Mahamastakabhisheka, the great statue is bathed and anointing ceremony of Bhagawan Bahubali is held once in every twelve years. The huge statue of Lord Gommateshwara is worshipped by pouring thousands of pots of milk, ghee, sandal, saffron, flowers etc., from devotees attended from all over the world. The last Mahamasthakabhisheka at Karkala was held here in February 2002. The next Mahamastakabhisheka at Karkala will be held in 2014 A.D. Other attractions of Karkala St. Lawrence church of Attur: St. Lawrence Church is situated at foothill of Parpale Hill in a little village called Attur which is about 5 km west of Karkala Bus Stand. This Church has remarkably rich history. St. Lawrence feast is held every year, which attracts thousands of people from different parts of the state. The few other temples found at Karkala include Anantashayana, Gopalakrishna, Veerabhadra, and Venkataramana.
