Hiremagalur
Hiremagalur is a village located at the south-east of Chikmagalur town.
Hiremagalur literally means, 'The town of the elder daughter' in the Kannada language. As per the people of this place, Hiremagalur was a prosperous town during the 9th and 11th centuries.
It is also believed that that in this area, nine siddhas performed penance near a pond in the village known as Siddha Pushkarni.
According to the legend, Parashurama also lived in this village, hence this village is also called as Bhargavipura, the town of Bhargava.
Kodandarama swamy Temple
The main attraction of Hiremagalur is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Kodandarama swamy.
Kodandarama swamy temple at Hiremagalur appears to have been built in three levels. This temple architecture is in the Hoysala style, so far as the Garbhagriha as well as Sukanasi are concerned, the remaining parts being additions in the Dravidian style. The current Navaranga is constructed in the 14th century A.D., but the Mukhamantapa (porch) belonging to the 16th century A.D.
The images of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are different here from popular renderings of the trio, where Sita appears to Rama's left.
In reply to the request made by Parashurama to Lord Rama to show the scene of his marriage, Lord Rama took Sita to his right and Lakshmana to his left. Hence, the Kodandarama swamy temple at Hiremagalur is unusual and distinct.
