Hariharapura

Hariharapura is a small village and a pilgrimage center located in the Koppa Taluk of Chikmagalur district.
Hariharapura village got its name by the presence of two temples Hari (Lord Vishnu) and Hara (Lord Shiva) located across each other.

The main attraction of Hariharapura is the Adi Shankaracharya Sharada Lakshmi Narasimha Peeta, a Mutt of Goddess Sharadamba situated on the banks of river Tunga.

History of Sharadamba Mutt at Hariharapura

As per the legend, the Daksha Yagna was performed at this holy place on the banks of river Tunga. As an evidence of this event, we can find an antique temple dedicated to Swayambhu Dakshahara Someshwara at Hariharapura.

Sage Agastya had his Ashrama was set here and he performed penance here. Sage Agastya was worshipping the idol of Lord Lakshminarasimha Swamy which later came to his Parashisya (disciple's disciple) Sage Govinda Yogi. From him the idol of Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy came to one young boy, Krishna, who worshipping the Lord as well as continued his severe penance at this holy place.

Jagadguru Sri Adi Sankaracharya, visited Hariharapura with Mother Sharada. He met young Krishna and after hearing all information and moved by the diving vibrations of this place, decided to install Sri Chakra and consecrated Mother Sharadamba initiated Upadesha to Sri Krishna. And the Sri Adishankaracharya Sharada Lakminarasimha Peetam came into existence and this is one of few Dharma Peetams introduced by Sri Adishankaracharya.
