Basrur Mahalingeshwara Temple
Basrur is a beautiful village located at a distance of 5 Km from Kundapur in Udupi district. Basrur was historically called as Vasupura, the capital of Vasuchakravarti.
Basrur was once a historic port town of Tulunadu on the banks of the Varahi River. The port was utilized by merchants of many foreign countries primarily to supply for the needs of Keladi Samsthana, which was near Shimoga.
Basrur is also popular for old temples. It houses many temples but Shree Mahatobar Mahalingeshwara Temple is of historical importance. The Basrur Mahalingeshwara Temple has a history of 1500 years. This temple was earlier called as the Nakharesvara Temple.
Basrur is also spiritual centre for Goud Saraswat Brahmin community and Sri Mahalasa Narayani temple is also located in Basrur.
