Talakaveri in Kodagu
Talakaveri is the birthplace of the sacred river Kaveri. Talakaveri is located on the slopes of the Brahmagiri hill near Bhagamandala in Kodagu district, 1,276 meters above the sea level. However, there is not a permanent visible flow from this place to the main river course except during the rainy season.
A small square tank or kundike has been erected on a hillside, at the place that is said to be the origin of river Kaveri. The Kaveri River originates as a spring feeding this tank, which is considered to be a holy place to bathe on "Tula Sankramana" (usually falling on October 17th or 18th). It is believed that on the day of the "Tula Sankramana", at an auspicious moment, the holy Kaveri appears, and that her arrival is indicated by a sudden upsurge of the water in the pond. Taking bath in this spot on "Tula Sankramana" in October is considered very sacred.
The waters are then said to flow underground to emerge as the river some distance away. The temple has been renovated extensively by the state government in 2007.
There are temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Ganapathi at the source of Kaveri. As per the legend, the Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Maheshehwara gave appeared before sage Agastya at the holy Ashwantha tree near the temple.
