Nagarahole National Park

Nagarahole National Park, a perfect gateway for nature lovers is located at a distance of 95 km from Mysore and it is spread between Mysore and Kodagu districts. Nagarahole National Park includes Forest, little streams, attractive waterfalls and valleys. This park is located to the northwest of Bandipur National Park. Kabini dam divides this park from Bandipur National Park.
The Nagarahole National park gets its name from the combination of two Kannada words. 'Naga' meaning snake, and 'hole' meaning streams.

Nagarahole National Park was setup in 1955 and is one of the best-managed parks in India. In 1975 its area stretched to 643.39 sq. km. The sanctuary comprises three forest ranges namely, Nagarahole, Kallahalla & Thitimathi. The original forest was once an exclusive hunting place for the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore. The climate is tropical; summer is hot and winter is enjoyable.

Nagarahole National Park is mostly moist mixed deciduous forest in the Southern parts, Dry tropical forest towards east (Bandipur) and Sub mountain hill valley swamp forest.

Most of the South Indian species of animals are represented in the sanctuary, Wild Elephants, Barking Deer, Sambur, Bison, Panther, Spotted Deer, Mongoose, Civet cat, Hyena, wild Pig and sloth Bear are commonly met with. The park boasts a healthy Tiger-predator ratio. Tiger, Bison and Elephant are much more here than in Bandipur National Park.

Reptiles like King Cobra, Krait, the marsh crocodile, Python, Viper, Tortoise, Monitor Lizard, Toads are found here.

Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 250 species of birds such as Herons, storks, woodpeckers, sunbirds, wagtails, egrets, ducks, partridges, peafowl, lapwings, kites, eagles, falcons, sandpipers, warblers, babblers, shrikes and owls.

The main trees found in Nagarahole National Park are Rosewood, Teak, Sandalwood and Silver oak.

Tribes such as Jenu Kurubas (honey-gatherers), the Betta Kurubas (hill tribes) and the Hakki-Pikki (bird trappers) inhabit Nagarahole National Park.

The Sanctuary is open all through the year and the ideal time to visit the Nagarhole National park is from June to November.
