Bhatkal
Bhatkal is one of the important port towns of Karnataka. Bhatkal is taluk headquarters in Uttara Kannada (North Canara) district.
Bhatkal town is situated between the sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other. This coastal city is situated at an altitude of just 4 meters above sea level.
History of Bhatkal
Acoording to the history, Bhatkal was ruled by several rulers of Hoysala, Vijayanagar empire and Saluva rulers.
Bhatkal was initially invaded by Chola emperors during 10th century. As a symbol of victory, they built Soleswara Temple in Bhatkal. This temple is believed to be the oldest temple of Bhatkal.
Portuguese also took the control over Bhatkal in 16th Century. It passed to Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan from Keladi rulers and later Bhatkal was ruled by British after Tipus death.
